The Majority caucus in Parliament has formally petitioned the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, to declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant following the annulment of the constituency’s 2024 election by the Tamale High Court.

The caucus insists that the current Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, must withdraw from all parliamentary duties until a court-ordered rerun of the election is completed.

According to the Majority, both Parliament and the MP have been duly served with the ruling for a fresh poll after a successful legal challenge, making his continued participation in proceedings untenable.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor invoked precedent to justify their demand. He recalled the case of Gyakye Quayson, who was barred from Parliament after a court ordered a rerun of his election.

“This House has walked this path before. When Honourable Gyakye Quayson was ordered by the court to go for a rerun, he was not allowed to participate in proceedings. That precedent stands. Nobody can tell us that Honourable Nyindam must have a voice in this House today. It will not happen,” he declared.

However, the Minority caucus has pushed back strongly, vowing to resist any move to bar the Kpandai MP from representing his constituents.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, November 26, warned that his side would challenge any attempt to remove Nyindam from Parliament until all legal processes are fully exhausted.

The matter now sets the stage for a fierce parliamentary and legal battle ahead of the anticipated rerun election.
