Story Highlights
  • MahamaCares fills healthcare gaps not covered by NHIS, focusing on chronic diseases
  • Quarterly free screenings provide medical tests, medication, and lifestyle advice
  • First Lady urges strict adherence to medical guidance for long-term health improvement
First Lady and founder of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Mahama, is calling on individuals living with chronic non-communicable diseases to fully embrace the upcoming MahamaCares health programme, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

Speaking at a free health screening event for over 145 retired Assemblies of God ministers and their spouses in Accra on Saturday, June 7, she emphasized that MahamaCares is designed to address critical healthcare gaps not currently covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The programme will especially target chronic health conditions and emphasize preventive care at the community level.

The event, held at the Ringway Gospel Centre, marked the third round of quarterly screenings supported by the Lordina Foundation. This commitment began in September 2024 to support retired clergy and their families with ongoing health checks and treatment.

Medical professionals including urologists, gynecologists, dietitians, and general practitioners were present to conduct screenings such as blood sugar tests, cancer checks, prostate exams, and to provide medication and lifestyle advice.

Lordina Mahama noted that this third screening builds upon the success of previous sessions held in November 2024 and March 2025. She encouraged participants to take their medical guidance seriously, stressing that managing long-term health conditions requires consistency and dedication.
Reverend Dr. Harry Insaidoo, President of the Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, expressed profound gratitude, calling the initiative one of the most impactful interventions they’ve received.

He lauded both Lordina and former President John Mahama for their unwavering support, and thanked the medical teams and church leadership for making the programme a success.
“This has truly been one of the most fulfilling experiences for us. Every three months, we’re thoroughly examined, given medication, and educated on how to lead healthier lives,” he shared.
