President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to ensuring the independence of Ghana’s judiciary, calling it a constitutional safeguard vital for protecting all citizens, including the office of the President.

Addressing the swearing-in of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Jubilee House in Accra, President Mahama highlighted the importance of a balanced relationship among the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

He stressed that while each branch must operate independently, collaboration is essential for national progress.

“The strength of our democracy depends on the delicate yet essential balance of powers among the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. Today as President, I pledge my unwavering commitment to the independence of the judiciary,” Mahama declared.

The President noted that judicial independence does not indicate a lack of accountability but serves as a constitutional safeguard. He urged the protection of the judiciary’s financial, institutional, and administrative autonomy and emphasized that court decisions—popular or unpopular—must be respected and enforced as the foundation of the rule of law.

Expressing confidence in Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s leadership, President Mahama affirmed that the judiciary will continue to fulfill its constitutional mandate without fear or favour.
