Kumasi Mayor Orders Closure of Chop Bar Over Sanitation Breaches, Summons Operators to Court
Action follows inspection that uncovered poor waste disposal and drainage overflow posing public health risks

- Alpha and Omega Chop Bar was closed following a KMA inspection that revealed poor sanitation and choked drains
- Waste discharge from the food joint and a nearby public toilet caused drainage overflow and offensive stench
- The Mayor has summoned the operators and more than ten other businesses to court for sanitation violations
The Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang-Boadi, has ordered the immediate closure of the popular Alpha and Omega Chop Bar at Krobo-Odumase in Kumasi’s Central Business District over serious sanitation breaches.
The directive followed an inspection tour during which the Mayor observed a strong, offensive stench emanating from an overflowing drainage system that had spilled onto the main road, posing a major public health threat to traders and commuters.
Investigations revealed that waste discharged from the chop bar had choked the drains, leading to the overflow. The situation was further worsened by the activities of a public toilet facility situated directly behind the food joint.
As part of enforcement measures, the Mayor ordered that the operators of the toilet facility be summoned to court for allegedly operating with fake documentation and without a septic tank, instead discharging human waste directly into the drain.
In addition, more than ten other shops whose activities were found to be contributing to the unsanitary conditions in the area have also been summoned to court.
Speaking on Wednesday, January 21, Mayor Agyemang-Boadi expressed disappointment at the state of sanitation and issued a stern warning to operators of food and sanitation-related businesses to strictly comply with environmental and public health regulations.
“We are summoning all of them to court for the law to deal with them,” the Mayor stated.
