Kpandai MP Nyindam Fights Back: Files Appeal to Stop Court-Ordered Rerun

Incumbent MP challenges High Court ruling, seeks stay of execution after order for fresh election

  • MP Nyindam files appeal and seeks stay of execution against rerun order
  • NPP alleges irregularities in court process and questions judgment
  • Appeal could delay the 30-day rerun mandated by the High Court

Matthew Nyindam, the sitting Member of Parliament for Kpandai, has filed an appeal and applied for a stay of execution against the Tamale High Court’s decision ordering a rerun of the constituency’s parliamentary election.

The High Court directed that a fresh poll be held within 30 days after ruling that procedural breaches at the collation centre compromised the integrity of the 2024 parliamentary election.

The judgment, which favoured NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, concluded that electoral lapses denied him full participation in the process.

Mr. Nyindam’s legal team is now contesting the ruling, seeking to suspend the rerun until the appeal is fully determined.

Speaking to Channel One TV on Monday, November 24, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed raised concerns about the court process.

“Before the proceedings even began, the judgment was already typed out on the computer. We were shocked. Outside the courtroom, NDC bigwigs were jubilating even before the ruling was delivered,” he alleged.

He further argued that the dispute affected only 41 out of 152 polling stations, questioning why the judge ordered a rerun across the entire constituency.

“All the pink sheets had been duly signed with no issues in the remaining polling stations. At most, only those 41 stations should be involved in any rerun,” he maintained.

Mr. Mohammed confirmed that both the appeal and the stay of execution were filed at exactly 10:04 a.m., moments after the court’s pronouncement.

The move is expected to trigger further legal battles, potentially delaying the slated rerun and intensifying political tension as both the NPP and NDC keep a close watch on the unfolding developments in Kpandai.
