Kofi Adu Domfeh, Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has emphasized the pivotal role of responsible journalism in driving national development.
Media as a Catalyst for Progress
Speaking at the 6th Congregation and Matriculation Ceremony of the OTEC School of Journalism and Communication Studies in Kumasi, Mr. Domfeh noted that media serves as a cornerstone for societal advancement.
“The media is the catalyst that makes development possible. Where information flows freely and responsibly, societies progress. Where truth is upheld, citizens trust the institutions that serve them. Ethical journalism fosters national growth,” he said.
He encouraged journalists to uphold fact-checking, verification, and public interest reporting, stressing that credibility is a journalist’s most valuable asset.
Prioritizing Journalist Well-being
Mr. Domfeh further highlighted the importance of journalists safeguarding their safety, mental health, and personal integrity.
“Responsible media also means responsible journalists—those who prioritize their well-being. You cannot serve society effectively when overwhelmed or burnt out,” he remarked.
Commendation and Challenge
He commended OTEC School of Journalism and Communication Studies for its dedication to academic excellence and practical training, emphasizing the need for robust communication institutions to guide national development.
He also challenged the graduating class to serve with integrity and courage, shaping the national narrative and positively influencing the country’s future. Matriculating students were encouraged to approach their training with discipline, curiosity, and humility.
