The death toll from severe flooding in Kenya has risen to 42 following days of torrential rain that triggered flash floods across multiple regions, authorities confirmed Sunday.

Police reported that 26 of the fatalities occurred in Nairobi, where floodwaters swept through low-lying neighborhoods and informal settlements, submerging homes and washing away vehicles as rivers overflowed.

Emergency teams continue search and rescue operations across the capital and surrounding areas, with officials warning that additional rainfall could worsen the situation.

Fatalities were also recorded in several other counties as the weekend downpours flooded roads, disrupted transport, and upended daily life in towns across the country.

Public Service and Special Programmes Minister Geoffrey Ruku confirmed the rising death toll and said the government has deployed emergency response teams to assist affected communities.

Ruku further announced that the government will cover hospital costs for flood victims and pay burial expenses for families who lost loved ones in the disaster, aiming to ease the burden on affected households.

Floodwaters have caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, particularly in Nairobi and surrounding regions, while authorities continue evacuations from the most severely inundated areas.
