Kennedy Agyapong is “Man of the Moment,” Says Dr. K.K. Sarpong Ahead of NPP Presidential Primaries
Former GNPC CEO says Agyapong has the youth’s support and is the leader needed to rebuild the party after 2024 defeat.

- Dr. K.K. Sarpong endorses Kennedy Agyapong as the NPP’s leading contender for the 2028 flagbearership
- He argues that new leadership is needed after the party’s 2024 election defeat, criticizing Dr. Bawumia’s performance
- Kennedy Agyapong has strong support from Ghanaian youth, who see him as a leader committed to their concerns
Dr. K.K. Sarpong, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Senior Member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, has expressed strong support for Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV and Radio, Dr. Sarpong described the upcoming January 31, 2026, primaries as a “two-horse race” between Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to Dr. Sarpong, Kennedy Agyapong is currently the “man of the moment” and has the backing of Ghana’s youth, who see him as a leader committed to their concerns. “At this point, nobody else,” he said. “The youth have identified you as the man helping them.”
Reflecting on the 2024 general election defeat, Dr. Sarpong said former President Akufo-Addo received almost 6.8 million votes in the 2016 elections, while Dr. Bawumia had 4.6 million—a wide difference that calls for careful consideration.
“The process used in 2023 for selecting the flagbearer for the 2024 election was heavily skewed in favor of Bawumia, which is why Alan Kyerematen was right to withdraw from the party,” he added.
He criticized Dr. Bawumia’s performance, noting that as chairman of the economic committee, he did not meet expectations.
“Yes, we can blame Akufo-Addo, but Bawumia was the leader of the team and didn’t perform well. This situation calls for a new leader,” Dr. Sarpong added.
Dr. K.K. Sarpong stated that all five aspirants deserve recognition, but the NPP now needs Kennedy Agyapong’s leadership. “This situation calls for a new leader,” he emphasized.
He praised Agyapong’s appeal, saying, “Kennedy Agyapong is the man the youth love, and even I, Dr. K.K. Sarpong, have been convinced by his leadership.”
Dr. Sarpong urged the party to consider a fresh approach for 2028, emphasizing that new leadership is required to redeem the NPP after its “abysmal” 2024 election results.
