The flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, has expressed his frustration over his disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Jean Mensah from the upcoming December 2024 presidential race.
Mornah was one of 11 presidential aspirants who were disqualified by the EC due to errors in their nomination forms.
Despite challenging the disqualification in court, an Accra High Court ruled against him on October 21, 2024, with Justice Richard Apietu stating that Mornah’s claims were unfounded.
In an emotional interview on Lawson TV/Radio’s Ghana Se Sen Morning Show with Kwame Tanko, Mornah described the shock of disqualification as devastating.
“Shock and disbelief can kill a person. Many have died from it. If you’ve never prepared to be president, you can’t understand the impact. Some of us went through primaries and intense campaigning before we got endorsed, only to be disqualified over flimsy reasons,” he said.
Mornah criticized Jean Mensah for disqualifying candidates despite her lack of experience in contesting elections herself.
“Someone who has never run for classroom prefect can disqualify you, and people expect you to be excited about it? There’s pettiness in this disqualification. People believed that had I contested, things might have changed,” he stated.
Mornah also criticized the EC’s leadership, accusing it of undermining Ghana’s democracy by being led by individuals with close personal ties.
“We cannot let our democracy be controlled by an institution run by a husband and wife,” he added.
He further justified the PNC’s endorsement of John Mahama and the NDC in the upcoming elections, explaining that Jean Mensah’s appointment by President Akufo-Addo has made her a hindrance to the country.
Mornah argued that the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government has failed and deceived the Ghanaian people, making it impossible for him to endorse them.
