Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a 2–0 defeat to Japan in an international friendly on Tuesday in Toyota, with goals from Takumi Minamino and Ritsu Doan sealing the hosts’ victory.
Despite the loss, the match provided valuable insights for coach Otto Addo ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.
Japan came out fast, testing Ghana goalkeeper Joseph Anang early, who made a sharp save in just the fifth minute on his debut.
The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Kaishu Sano delivered a precise pass to Minamino, who calmly slotted the ball low to give Japan a 1–0 lead.

Ghana responded, with Kamaldeen Sulemana and debutant Derrick Köhn creating some promising moves. Köhn’s left-footed strike from a corner and a chance he set up for Jonas Adjei narrowly missed, but the Black Stars showed resilience and tightened their marking.
The second half saw Japan dominate possession again, and in the 59th minute, Ritsu Doan doubled the lead with a low strike past Anang, who had kept Ghana in the game earlier.
Ghana attempted a comeback with several substitutions, including Alidu Seidu, Christopher Bonsu Baah, Gideon Mensah, Prince Adu, and Prince Owusu. Prince Adu came closest with a long-range effort saved by Japan’s goalkeeper.
Japan managed the closing stages efficiently, holding on for a 2–0 win.
Despite the defeat, debutants Joseph Anang and Derrick Köhn impressed. Anang displayed composure in goal and organized the defense well, while Köhn showcased attacking initiative and contributed significantly during Ghana’s best spell in the first half.
Their performances give Addo promising options as the team prepares for World Cup qualifiers.
