A taxi driver has been killed in a devastating early morning crash at the Afosu Washing Bay near New Abirem after his vehicle collided with a tanker carrying ammonium nitrate emulsion.
The accident occurred around 4:05 a.m. and involved a long-vehicle truck with registration number WR 1739-19, which was transporting ammonium nitrate emulsion from New Abirem to Tarkwa, and a taxi with registration number GE 6552-16, travelling from Nkawkaw to New Abirem.
According to the truck driver, he was driving within his lane when he noticed the taxi approaching at high speed and swerving.
He said he attempted to move aside to avoid a collision, but the taxi crashed into the tanker and somersaulted several times before landing in a nearby bush. The taxi driver died instantly.
An eyewitness, Abɔdwesɛ, said he had just opened his shop when he heard a rushing sound followed by a loud bang that sent dust into the air.
When residents rushed to the scene after the dust settled, they found the taxi driver motionless inside the wreckage.
The eyewitness expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents at the location, noting that this was the second fatal crash at the junction in two months.
He called on the local assembly to install speed ramps and other safety measures to help reduce accidents in the area.
