Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education and one-time contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership, has denied claims that he is bitter about being overlooked as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 elections.

The slot instead went to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the former Energy Minister, sparking rumours that Dr. Adutwum was displeased and plotting a future presidential bid in 2028 to challenge Bawumia.

But in an interview, Dr. Adutwum firmly dismissed those rumours. “If I were angry, I wouldn’t have campaigned for Bawumia. In fact, no one campaigned for him more than I did,” he asserted.

He highlighted his significant contribution to promoting Bawumia’s vision, especially in education. “I personally funded national media coverage to highlight Bawumia’s educational agenda. I’m not petty,” he stated.

Dr. Adutwum made it clear that the choice of a running mate was entirely Dr. Bawumia’s decision, one he respects. “He made his choice—that was his call. I wasn’t waiting to be picked,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when conversations around the future leadership of the NPP are gaining momentum ahead of the 2028 elections.
