  • Mahama pledges to sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill immediately after parliamentary approval
  • Says government’s position aligns fully with the Christian Council’s beliefs
  • Supports relaying the bill for debate and possible amendments before passage

President John Dramani Mahama has delivered his clearest commitment yet on the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, declaring that he will waste no time in signing it into law once Parliament approves it.

The proposed Family Values Bill stalled under the previous administration after a legal challenge questioned its constitutionality, preventing former President Akufo-Addo from assenting to it. But Mahama says there will be no hesitation on his part.

Addressing the Christian Council during a courtesy call at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the President affirmed that his position aligns fully with the Council’s beliefs.

“Marriage is between a man and a woman. A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position,” he said firmly.

Mahama also backed the Speaker of Parliament’s recommendation for the bill to be re-laid, debated, and refined if necessary before passage.

“We agree with the Speaker—let Parliament relay the bill, debate it, and make any amendments needed,” he said.

However, his stance remained unequivocal:
“If the people’s Parliament endorses the bill, votes on it and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it.”
