The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has instructed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to take over investigations into a violent attack on the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and his team at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.

According to a police statement, the assault, which occurred on November 1, allegedly involved the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, who is accused of inciting a mob to obstruct the NAIMOS task force during an anti-illegal mining operation.

The MP has since been invited to assist in investigations. Preliminary police reports indicate that the NAIMOS team had arrested several illegal miners near Bronikrom and seized firearms, vehicles, and ammunition before the mob intervened.

Tensions escalated when a group of about 600 people reportedly besieged the Hwidiem Police Station, demanding the release of the suspects and vandalising property, including the Director’s vehicle. Swift intervention by police and military teams helped restore calm.

The Ghana Police Service has condemned the attack and warned against any interference with legitimate law enforcement activities.
