A 50-year-old man has been arrested by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Northern Regional Police Command for allegedly impregnating a 14-year-old primary school pupil in Nyanshegu, a suburb of Tamale.

The suspect, identified as Mohammed, is further accused of taking the girl to a private health facility to terminate the pregnancy without the consent of her parents.

He has been arraigned before the Tamale Magistrate Court 1, presided over by His Worship Stephen Tabiri, and remanded in custody. The accused faces charges of defilement and causing abortion and is expected to reappear in court on March 4, 2026.

Speaking to Channel One News, the girl’s father, Mohammed Salifu, affirmed the family’s determination to pursue justice. He revealed that community chiefs and opinion leaders had tried to persuade them to settle the matter out of court, but the family refused.

“Two chiefs and some opinion leaders came to our house to plead with us to withdraw the case, but we insisted we want justice for my daughter,” he said.

Sources also indicate that the family and others involved in the case have allegedly received threats from individuals believed to be connected to the accused.
