Hwidiem Clash Exposes NDC’s Deep Involvement in Galamsey Activities – NPP Ahafo Chairman, Owusu Sekyere
NPP Ahafo Regional Chairman, Owusu Sekyere, alleges that the recent Hwidiem clash has uncovered the involvement of NDC supporters in illegal mining operations across parts of the region.

- NPP’s Ahafo Chairman blames NDC supporters for Hwidiem galamsey clashes
- Says illegal mining is spreading to Bechem and Kenyasi
- Accuses NDC of nurturing and protecting illegal miners for political gain
The Ahafo Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Owusu Sekyere, has accused some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being behind the violent clash between residents and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force at Hwidiem.
Speaking on Ghana Se Sen morning show on Lawson TV/Radio, Mr. Sekyere alleged that most of the youth who attacked the NAIMOS team were known NDC supporters, describing the incident as clear evidence of the party’s involvement in illegal mining (galamsey) in the region.
“Now Ghanaians have seen that the NDC are doing galamsey,” he stated. “The issue at Ahafo is serious — illegal mining is now happening in places like Bechem and Kenyasi, which were never known for galamsey.”
The NPP Chairman expressed concern over what he described as the growing influence of politically backed galamsey groups, saying the NDC had “reared the cub and allowed it to grow” — a metaphor for nurturing and empowering illegal miners within the party’s ranks.
He added that the situation was now out of control and called on security agencies to take firm action to restore order and protect Ahafo’s natural resources.
According to Mr. Sekyere, the recent chaos at Hwidiem is just a symptom of a deeper problem — a politically motivated network of illegal miners operating under the guise of party activities.
