Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.

His death was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview. Details surrounding the cause of death are yet to be officially disclosed.

Yaw Sarpong’s passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwaa, widely celebrated for her powerful and soulful vocals with Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo Band. Maame Tiwaa passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after a brief illness. Her one-week observation has since been held, and the family is awaiting her final burial.

The close timing of these two losses has sent shockwaves through the gospel music fraternity, with many describing it as a painful season for the Asomafo family and Ghana’s Christian music community as a whole.

For several years, Yaw Sarpong had been battling ill health, which occasionally forced him to step away from public performances as he focused on treatment and recovery.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s gospel music history, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a group that helped define modern Akan gospel music through deep biblical lyrics, disciplined harmonies, and a strong spiritual foundation.

Together with Asomafo, he produced timeless gospel classics such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, songs that continue to resonate in churches across Ghana and beyond.

In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

As Ghana mourns the loss of both Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwaa, many find comfort in the legacy they leave behind — a legacy of faith, music, and lives touched through gospel ministry.
