Haruna Iddrisu: Students Should Not Be Denied Religious Rights

Education Minister Urges Schools to Uphold Students' Right to Religious Freedom

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has urged school management across the country to allow students to freely practice their religious faith without any restrictions.

He emphasized, “Every Ghanaian child is entitled to the full benefit of the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the constitution, and this includes both the child and the school.”

The Minister made this statement while attending the 2025 Eid ul-Fitr prayers with the Ambariyya Muslim sect in Tamale on Monday, March 31.

Earlier, on Saturday, March 29, the Ghana Muslim Students Association expressed disappointment in a press release over the decision of Saint Roses Senior High School in Akwatia, Eastern Region, to deny Muslim students permission to go home and observe Eid-ul-Fitr, despite a circular from the Ghana Education Service supporting their request.

In response, Minister Iddrisu stated, “As Ghana’s Minister of Education, I want to make it clear that every child, and every Ghanaian, is entitled to the full benefit of all rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution. No school has the authority to deny any Ghanaian child the right to practice their faith.”

He concluded by urging all schools to recognize and respect the religious rights of every Ghanaian child.
