The Ministry of Transport has announced an investigation into the reported auctioning of over 300 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses during the previous administration.

Deputy Managing Director of MMT, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, disclosed that the buses were sold in the period leading up to the 2024 general elections, with some reportedly fetching as little as GHS 2,500.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, January 19, 2026, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari said the probe aims to determine whether the auctions were conducted in a transparent and merit-based manner.

“As for the auctions, the boards are reviewing whether the prices were fair and reflective of the buses’ value,” he said.

He added, “It is not something I can immediately confirm as fair or underpriced. I have instructed management and boards to re-examine the process, and we will decide on the next steps after the review.”

While the investigation continues, the Minister stressed that the government’s immediate focus is addressing pressing transport challenges for commuters.

“But the reality today is how we improve the current situation. We have engaged with the unions and implemented measures that will provide some relief to commuters,” Bukari noted.
