Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reassured Ghanaians that the government is actively implementing measures to resolve the ongoing transport challenges affecting commuters nationwide.
The assurance comes amid reports of a shortage of commercial vehicles, which has caused long queues, passenger frustration, and occasional exploitation by some drivers.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting with transport operators on Friday, January 16, the Vice President acknowledged the difficulties faced by commuters, including terminal congestion and extended waiting times. She emphasized that the government considers the issue a collective problem requiring joint efforts.
“Sometimes, the problem arises from various factors, including exploitation by some drivers, long queues, congestion, and all the stress associated with commuting. Government is fully aware, and we see it as everyone’s responsibility to find solutions,” she stated.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang disclosed that the government has introduced measures to increase the availability of high-capacity buses for public and private operators.
“His Excellency has asked me to assure everyone that support will be provided to Metro Mass, Aayalolo, and private operators with new high-occupancy buses to enhance services in the medium term,” she said.
Additionally, plans are underway to expedite repairs on broken-down buses, enabling operators to quickly return more vehicles to service and reduce commuter waiting times.
