The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for urgent reforms to address a growing crisis in the teaching profession, citing inadequate salaries, unsafe work environments, and pension challenges.

Speaking at the 7th Quadrennial (54th) National Delegates Conference this morning, GNAT President Rev. Isaac Owusu highlighted the struggles many teachers face due to salaries that do not reflect their hard work.

“It is incumbent upon us to address these issues head-on,” Rev. Owusu said, demanding an immediate review of the Single Spine Pay Policy to align with the government’s “Ghana Reset” agenda and advocating for improved salaries.

The GNAT president also called for a dedicated funding stream for public basic education and emphasized the urgent need for pension reform to secure teachers’ futures.

Rev. Owusu warned of rising violence against teachers, including attacks by students, and stressed the government’s responsibility to ensure a safe and secure workplace.

“The government has declared zero tolerance against teacher assaults and brutality this year,” he said. “If such incidents occur, teachers will invoke the spirit and solidarity of ‘touch one, touch all.’”

He further noted that GNAT has historically contributed to national discourse, making its voice heard on educational, social, and economic issues in Ghana.

“As a corporate organization, GNAT remains committed to advocating for the welfare of teachers and the growth of education in the country,” Rev. Owusu added.
