Ghana midfielder Abu Francis appeared to suffer a serious ankle fracture during the Black Stars’ international friendly against Japan on Friday at Toyota Stadium, part of the 2025 Kirin Cup.
The injury occurred about ten minutes into the second half as Francis attempted to block a shot. The 24-year-old was stretchered off the pitch, leaving teammates visibly shaken by the severity of the incident.
Francis, who had started the match, was replaced in the 56th minute by Alidu Seidu. The Right to Dream Academy graduate joined Ligue 1 side Toulouse this summer from Belgian club Cercle Brugge and had earned a call-up for the Japan and South Korea friendlies after missing Ghana’s September and October World Cup qualifiers.
Given the nature of the injury, Francis is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, dealing a blow to coach Otto Addo’s squad ahead of upcoming fixtures.
Japan went on to claim a 2–0 victory, with goals from Takumi Minamino and Ritsu Doan.
