The government of Ghana has launched negotiations with the family of Guinea’s first President, Ahmed Sékou Touré, to assume control of the residence where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah lived and worked during his final years as Co-President of Guinea.

The initiative, directed by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to preserve the legacy of Ghana’s first President and convert the property into a heritage and tourism site highlighting his historic journey from Ghana to Guinea.

Disclosing the plan on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the government intends to renovate and conserve the residence as a tribute to Dr. Nkrumah while creating a comprehensive visitor experience tracing his life and leadership.

The decision was formally communicated to the Sékou Touré family on Saturday, when Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang led a Ghanaian delegation to visit the site and tour Nkrumah’s abandoned home. The visit followed the recent investiture of Guinea’s President, Mamady Doumbouya.

“The Mahama Administration intends to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea residence not only as an act of respect but also to preserve Osagyefo’s legacy and create a full experience for tourists to follow Nkrumah’s outstanding life from Ghana to Guinea,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is negotiating the terms and conditions of the proposed takeover while engaging heritage preservation experts to guide the renovation and conservation process.

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the Ghanaian public shall be fully apprised at every stage,” he assured.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, lived in Guinea following his 1966 overthrow, where he served as Co-President under Sékou Touré, marking a pivotal chapter in Pan-African history.
