The Government of Ghana has vehemently condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional move that poses a serious threat to democratic governance in the West African nation.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Ghana expressed “profound concern” over the coup carried out by elements of the Guinea-Bissau military, noting that it disrupted the electoral process following peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.
The government emphasized that the military intervention undermines the democratic will of the people and has stalled the announcement of the election results, originally scheduled for November 27, 2025. Ghana urged all parties to resolve disputes through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognized channels.
The statement also called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights and security of both citizens and foreign nationals. Ghana expressed particular concern for the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, insisting that their safety and freedom of movement be guaranteed.
Furthermore, Ghana appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions.
The statement reaffirmed Ghana’s support for ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a regional response, highlighting the need to adhere to continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
