- Government launches Gun Amnesty to remove illegal firearms and prevent further crime
- Citizens urged to cooperate and surrender illegal guns to enhance national safety
Ghana has recorded 628 robberies and 340 murders nationwide as of July 2025, prompting government action to tackle rising crime, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak revealed on Tuesday, November 18, during a press conference in Accra.
The Minister expressed concern over the figures, highlighting a slightly lower yet still worrying trend compared to 2024, when 1,219 robberies and 552 murders were reported.
In response, the government has introduced a Gun Amnesty, following consultations with the Ghana Police Service, the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, security agencies, traditional leaders, religious bodies, and civil society organizations.
Described by Minister Muntaka as a “bold and compassionate initiative,” the amnesty allows individuals to surrender illegal firearms without fear of prosecution, aiming to reduce gun-related crimes and improve public safety.
The Interior Minister called on communities to actively participate, stressing that citizen cooperation is crucial to the success of the initiative and to building a safer Ghana for everyone.
