The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly denounced incidents of violence and alleged sexual abuse reported during the Super Zonal Sports Competition held in the Eastern Region from February 4 to 6, 2026.
In a statement issued on February 11 and signed by Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, GES said it had received disturbing reports of serious misconduct involving students, including a stabbing and an alleged gang rape.
Management described the incidents as unacceptable and stressed that such behaviour has no place within the education system. GES noted that inter-school sports are meant to promote discipline, teamwork, unity, and talent development, not violence or criminal activity.
Preliminary findings indicate that a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed about 200 metres from the competition venue after leaving the grounds to have lunch with a friend. The victim was reportedly attacked by students from New Juaben Senior High School.
GES also confirmed an alleged rape involving a female student of Osino Senior High School, who was reportedly assaulted in a bush some distance from the competition site. Two students have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in police custody assisting investigations. A third suspect, identified as the alleged ringleader and an old student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is on the run.
According to GES, the victim of the alleged sexual assault has received medical treatment and has been discharged from hospital. She is currently receiving counselling and psychosocial support from the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Girls’ Education Unit, and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).
The stabbed student has also been treated and discharged, with one suspect already in police custody to assist with investigations.
GES assured the public that the incidents are being treated with utmost seriousness and that all persons found culpable will face disciplinary and legal action in line with its code of conduct. The Service has also directed the Regional Director of Education to impose appropriate sanctions on the schools involved to serve as a deterrent.
