German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has officially cut the sod for a €5.6 million Centre of Excellence for Green Technology at the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), marking the start of construction for the state-of-the-art facility.
The centre, part of Ghana’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) transformation drive, is set to become a hub for research, innovation, and hands-on training in renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

At the ceremony, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu highlighted the project’s alignment with the government’s “Reset Agenda,” aimed at tackling youth unemployment through skill-based training initiatives. He also emphasized plans to roll out a comprehensive TVET policy and establish a dedicated TVET Fund to support technical and vocational institutions nationwide.
“As part of President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, we are committed to equipping our youth with the technical skills needed to make meaningful contributions to national development,” the minister said.
The programme began with President Steinmeier inspecting a full military Guard of Honour at the Forecourt of the Presidency, followed by a private meeting with President Mahama. The discussions focused on strengthening Ghana-Germany relations, particularly in trade, investment, technology, and development cooperation.
The Green Tech Centre is expected to boost Ghana’s capacity for sustainable innovation while providing young Ghanaians with practical, market-ready skills.
