The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—emphasizing that the battle is a long-term struggle requiring persistence, coordination, and strategic effort.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Mr. Buah declared that the fight is far from over but assured the nation that the government is determined to win.

“The fight against illegal mining is not an easy task. It’s a marathon, not a sprint—but we will prevail,” he stated.

He clarified that the government is not against mining but is rather promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices to protect the environment and natural resources.

The Minister also highlighted the government’s recent successes in the crackdown, announcing the seizure of 425 excavators and other illegal mining machinery nationwide. The Forestry Commission, which plays a key role in enforcement efforts, has also seized:

  • 177 excavators

  • 4 bulldozers

  • 12 vehicles

  • 43 motorbikes

  • 155 pumping machines

  • 184 changfang machines

  • 15 gold detectors

  • 10 heavy-duty generators

Mr. Buah concluded by reiterating that sustained efforts and collaboration among stakeholders are essential to completely eliminating illegal mining in Ghana.
