Lapaz Market Textile Shop Destroyed by Fire

- A young woman, identified as the shop owner, reportedly collapsed upon witnessing her business engulfed in flames
A fire incident at the Lapaz Market in Accra on Sunday, April 27, resulted in the complete destruction of a textile shop and the hospitalization of its owner.
The blaze, which reportedly originated on the upper floor of a building within the market, rapidly engulfed bedding materials and merchandise valued at millions of Ghana cedis.
A young woman, identified as the shop owner, reportedly collapsed upon witnessing her business engulfed in flames and was immediately transported to the Lapaz Community Hospital for medical attention.
Firefighters from the Abelenkpe branch of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the scene and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent shops within the bustling market.
The mother of the hospitalized shop owner, who is also a co-owner of the business, recounted that she was on the ground floor of the building when her grandchild alerted her to the fire raging upstairs.
Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Emmanuel Akwetey, the Operations Officer at the Abelenkpe GNFS, stated that the cause of the fire is currently undetermined. He added that investigations are underway to ascertain the precise circumstances that led to the devastating incident.
“We tried our best to ensure the fire doesn’t extend to adjoining shops. Our men are still in there conducting investigations, so at the appropriate time, the owner will be invited to our station for the report,” ADO I Akwetey explained. The focus now shifts to understanding the origin of the fire and supporting the affected shop owner and her family during this difficult time.
