A fire outbreak near the VVIP station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra has caused extensive damage to shops in the area, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.
The incident occurred at about 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Speaking in an interview, Accra Mayor Nii Kpakpo Allotey said preliminary information from the Ghana National Fire Service indicated that the fire was triggered by an electric pole overloaded with multiple wires.
Several shops were destroyed in the blaze, with clothing, deep freezers, and other merchandise reduced to debris. Fire officials confirmed that about 50 gas cylinders were retrieved from the scene, helping to prevent a potential explosion.
No casualties have been reported so far.
The Ghana National Fire Service remains on site, battling the flames with the support of additional fire tenders to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
Security agencies, including the police, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and fire personnel, are coordinating efforts at the scene. Authorities say further details will be provided as investigations continue.
