A tragic incident has struck Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, where a mining pit—believed to be used for illegal small-scale mining (galamsey)—has collapsed, reportedly killing four individuals and leaving approximately 20 others trapped beneath the rubble.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service, are currently at the scene.

They are working tirelessly with local volunteers in a race against time to rescue those still buried underground.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and unstable ground conditions continue to hinder rescue operations.

Despite these challenges, efforts are ongoing to reach the trapped miners and prevent further casualties.
