The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has provided an update on victims of last Wednesday’s stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium, where a military recruitment exercise turned deadly, claiming six lives.
Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of GAF’s Department of Public Relations, revealed that three of the five patients initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have improved and were transferred to general wards.
In an interview, Captain Arhin explained that 29 victims were brought to the hospital on the day of the incident. Medical teams have been working tirelessly to stabilise them and prevent further fatalities.
“The injured are doing well and are receiving the best care. On the day of the incident, we had five people in ICU. Now, three have improved and have been moved to another ward,” she said.
While some victims have been treated and discharged, 16 remain hospitalized, continuing to receive medical attention and monitoring.
“As we speak, 16 are still at the hospital. Others have been discharged and are recovering at home. We are giving all victims the best care possible to avoid any more loss of life,” Captain Arhin added.
The GAF also confirmed that the 37 Military Hospital is covering all medical costs for the victims, with government support, to ease the burden on families.
The tragic stampede occurred on Wednesday, November 12, when thousands of young Ghanaians surged into the stadium for the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment process. The overwhelming crowd at entry points resulted in chaos, causing multiple injuries and fatalities.
