  • The University of Ghana clarified that the reported fee hikes were mostly due to third-party charges

The Ministry of Education has rejected reports of a 25% rise in academic fees at the University of Ghana, emphasizing that any fee adjustments must be carefully discussed and cannot disadvantage students.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, January 5, Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Apaak stated that the Ministry does not support fee increases, whether initiated by university authorities or student leadership bodies.

“We do not agree with the 25% fee increment, whether by the SRC or GRASAG,” Dr. Apaak said, stressing that particular attention must be given to students who are still settling into their programmes.

Dr. Apaak clarified that no authorisation has been granted for any increase, and directed that all fees already paid under the new structure must be reversed until proper approval is obtained in line with regulatory procedures.

He also requested documentation from the University of Ghana to confirm that all fee-related directives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) have been fully implemented.

Meanwhile, the University of Ghana management explained that the reported fee hikes for the 2025/2026 academic year were largely due to third-party charges imposed by student leadership groups, rather than increases approved by the university itself.

The Deputy Minister has called for immediate engagement with all stakeholders to ensure transparency, fairness, and compliance with established fee guidelines.
