Prominent politician Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah has raised concerns over the increasing politicization of the Ghana Police Service, warning that partisan influence is undermining the institution’s integrity and public trust.

Speaking on recent developments, COKA advocated for reforms in how the Inspector General of Police (IGP) is selected. He proposed that the process should be internal and democratic—allowing police personnel themselves to vote for their leader.

“The time has come for the police to choose their own IGP,” he stated. “Commissioners who are qualified and interested in the role should submit their applications, and the rank and file of the service should vote to decide who leads them.”

COKA urged the Constitutional Review Committee to take up this proposal as a matter of urgency, emphasizing that such reforms would depoliticize the police leadership and improve accountability.

He also condemned recent incidents at Ablekuma South, where reports of police brutality surfaced during political tensions. Describing the events as “unacceptable,” he called for thorough investigations and greater responsibility within the service.

COKA’s remarks reflect growing public concern over the impartiality and effectiveness of law enforcement in Ghana, particularly in politically charged environments.
