Chelsea’s newly appointed head coach, Liam Rosenior, has been convicted of a speeding offence after failing to attend a scheduled speed awareness course due to travel disruptions.
Rosenior admitted to driving at 36mph in a 30mph zone on Rykneld Road in Littleover, Derbyshire, at 11:41am on July 7. He was initially offered the opportunity to avoid prosecution by completing a speed awareness course but did not attend the session.
In a written explanation to Derby Magistrates’ Court, Rosenior said fog had delayed his return flight to the UK, forcing him to stay an extra night and causing him to miss the course. He added that the situation arose from unforeseen circumstances and that he accepted the outcome.
The 41-year-old was convicted under a single justice procedure on January 2 and ordered to pay a total of £1,052 in fines, costs, and court fees.
The conviction comes shortly after Rosenior’s appointment as Chelsea head coach, following the departure of Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day. Rosenior was confirmed as Chelsea’s fourth permanent manager since the club was taken over by BlueCo in 2022 and has signed a long-term contract running until 2032.
Previously in charge of Strasbourg, a club also owned by Chelsea’s parent company, Rosenior described his move to Stamford Bridge as a major step up, saying the opportunity to manage a world-class club was one he could not refuse.
Rosenior began his managerial career at Derby County in an interim role before taking his first permanent post at Hull City, where he guided the club close to the Championship play-offs during an 18-month spell.
Despite the off-field setback, Rosenior has said he is fully focused on the challenge ahead at Chelsea and is looking forward to leading the Premier League side into a new era.
