The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced an indefinite strike starting Monday, November 24, 2025, citing the government’s failure to fully implement the National Labour Commission (NLC) arbitral award issued on May 2, 2023.
The strike will affect all 46 Colleges of Education nationwide. The decision was taken by CETAG’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in consultation with the National Council during an emergency meeting on November 19, 2025.
CETAG stated that continued government inaction left it with no choice but to suspend all services across the colleges.
Key grievances include the non-payment of all-year-round work compensation for 2022 duties at 39 colleges, with only partial payments made to Accra College of Education; outstanding Book and Research Allowance arrears for the 2023/2024 and 2022/2023 academic years; and Book and Research Top-up arrears for 2021/2022 owed to Akrokerri College of Education.
The association also raised concerns about the downgrading of experienced teachers holding master’s degrees, which they said undermines professional dignity and violates agreed conditions of service and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
In a statement, CETAG National President Maxwell Bunu and National Secretary Fidelis Kamaayi described the strike as a legitimate response to the government’s breach of agreements and disregard for legally binding labour directives.
They emphasised that members will not return to teaching or supervising students until all grievances are fully resolved.
