Club Brugge struck late to secure a dramatic draw against Atletico Madrid, leaving their Champions League knockout play-off finely poised ahead of the return leg.
The Spanish side appeared in full control at half-time after racing into a 2-0 lead. Julian Alvarez converted a penalty following a handball by Joaquin Seys, before Ademola Lookman added a second just before the break on his European debut for Atletico.
However, Brugge emerged revitalised after the interval. Raphael Onyedika reduced the deficit moments into the second half, sparking belief among the home crowd. The momentum continued when Nicolo Tresoldi brought the Belgian side level on the hour mark, guiding his finish past goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Atletico regained the advantage when Joel Ordonez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure from substitute Alexander Sorloth, who had earlier struck the woodwork after coming on for Antoine Griezmann.
Yet Brugge refused to surrender. With just a minute remaining, Christos Tzolis fired home a decisive equaliser to cap a pulsating contest.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone cut a frustrated figure as his side were pegged back twice, having looked set for a comfortable win.
The second leg will take place in Madrid on Tuesday, 24 February (20:00 GMT), with the victors set to meet either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16.
