A 23-year-old hairdressing apprentice, identified as Hajia Hawa, is reported missing after allegedly slipping into a large drain near the Swedru Mandela Market in the Central Region during a heavy rainstorm on Friday, May 22, 2026.

According to reports, Hawa, the youngest child in her family, was swept away by fast-flowing floodwaters and has not been found despite an intensive three-day search by the Swedru Asafo Company.

Her elder sister, Hadiya Mustapha, told the Ghana News Agency that Hawa had gone on an errand to purchase wigs from a shop near the market when the tragic incident occurred.

She said community leaders were immediately informed and mobilised a search party, but all efforts to locate her have so far been unsuccessful.

There are suspicions that the young apprentice may have been carried into the Akora River, which overflowed its banks following the heavy downpour.

Mrs. Mustapha expressed appreciation to the search team and community members for their continued support and solidarity during the ongoing search efforts.
