“Bawumia Was Part and Parcel of NPP’s Heavy 2024 Defeat” – Dr. K.K. Sarpong
Former GNPC CEO says Bawumia, as Economic Management Committee leader, shared responsibility for NPP’s 2024 election setback

- Dr. K.K. Sarpong says Dr. Bawumia, as Economic Management Committee leader, shares responsibility for NPP’s heavy 2024 election defeat
- He argues that the party needs new leadership ahead of the 2028 flagbearer race to rebuild and regain public confidence
- Sarpong emphasizes that fresh strategies and leadership are necessary to address shortcomings from the previous campaign
Dr. K.K. Sarpong, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Senior Member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, has attributed part of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) heavy defeat in the 2024 general elections to the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV and Radio, Dr. Sarpong noted that Dr. Bawumia, as chairman of the Economic Management Committee, was “part and parcel” of the team that oversaw the party’s campaign strategies and economic planning.
“Yes, we can blame former President Akufo-Addo, but Bawumia was the leader of the team and didn’t perform well,” Dr. Sarpong said.
“This situation calls for a new leader who can rejuvenate the party and restore confidence among the electorate.”
He added that the 2024 election results, which were “abysmal” for the NPP, underscored the need for fresh leadership ahead of the 2028 flagbearer race.
According to Dr. Sarpong, Kennedy Agyapong, who currently enjoys strong support among the youth, is best positioned to lead the party in the next election cycle.
Dr. Sarpong emphasized that while all aspirants for the 2028 flagbearership deserve recognition, the party requires a leader capable of addressing past shortcomings and rallying Ghanaians behind the NPP’s vision for the future.
