Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has cautioned Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to abuse their parliamentary majority to silence or suppress voices from the Minority.

His admonition came on the heels of Ewurabena Aubynn’s swearing-in as the new MP for Ablekuma North on Tuesday, July 22. Addressing the House, Bagbin stressed that a strong majority must not translate into the erosion of democratic dialogue.

“We should not use the overwhelming majority to try to bully or stifle the Minority from having their say on the floor of Parliament,” he warned.

Calling for maturity and leadership from the NDC side, Bagbin urged them to rise above partisan politics and demonstrate patience, tolerance, and national unity in their dealings.

“When you are given this mandate, you must act as the father and mother of the nation. So you must have the patience, you must have the tolerance to listen to the other side,” he advised.

He further reminded the House of wise counsel offered by former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing the importance of maturity and respect in parliamentary conduct.

“I hope and pray that this exaltation from both Presidents… will be taken by you,” Bagbin said. “We must allow our colleagues in the Minority to have their say.”
