The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has declared that any government official found participating in illegal mining activities will face arrest, emphasizing the administration’s determination to combat environmental degradation.

His remarks followed a call by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh for weekly updates from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources on the escalating destruction of forests and water bodies.

Speaking in Parliament, Ayariga asserted that President John Dramani Mahama will allow the law to take its course against culpable appointees, in contrast to the approach of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who, he said, failed to act against officials and party figures implicated in galamsey.

“Any government or party official, regardless of rank, caught aiding illegal mining will be arrested. The president will permit the due process of law to prevail,” he stated.

Ayariga added that previous administrations had overlooked reports of involvement by regional chairpersons and other officials in galamsey activities, highlighting the current government’s stricter stance.
