Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the African Union (AU) to head its Election Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo, ahead of the country’s presidential elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, March 10, the Office of the former President confirmed that Mr. Akufo-Addo will lead the mission tasked with monitoring the elections scheduled for March 15, 2026.

The African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) will include representatives from a broad range of continental institutions and stakeholder groups. These comprise members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), the Pan-African Parliament, the African Governance Platform, election management bodies, independent election experts, civil society organizations, and representatives of women’s and youth groups.

The mission is part of the AU’s ongoing efforts to promote transparent and credible electoral processes across Africa.

According to the statement, Mr. Akufo-Addo is expected to leave Accra on Friday, March 13, ahead of the elections, and return to Ghana on March 18, 2026, after completing the observation assignment.

This appointment underscores the important role former African leaders often play in supporting election observation missions throughout the continent.
