At least 28 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a construction crane fell onto a moving passenger train in northeastern Thailand, officials say.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in the Sikhiu district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, about 230 km northeast of Bangkok. The train was travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani Province when a crane being used on a high‑speed rail construction project collapsed onto the track, striking the train and causing several carriages to derail.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene after the crane crash caused a fire and left some carriages severely damaged. Around 195 passengers were onboard at the time of the incident. Many of the injured, including both adults and vulnerable passengers, have been taken to hospitals in the region for treatment, authorities said.

The high‑speed rail project, backed in part by international partners, aims to link parts of Thailand’s rail network and improve connectivity across the region. Government officials have ordered an investigation into the cause of the collapse, while emergency crews continue recovery and support operations.

Key details:
