Story Highlights
  • Ashanti NPP MPs condemn Asante Akim South MP Kwaku Asante Boateng over divisive “slave descendants” remarks
  • The Caucus says the NPP stands for unity, equality, and merit, not lineage or tribal identity
  • MPs urge restraint and discipline among party members to protect NPP’s cohesion and values

The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sharply condemned remarks made by Kwaku Asante Boateng, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, describing them as divisive, offensive, and contrary to the NPP’s founding principles.

Mr. Boateng is alleged to have claimed that the Ashantis once “used slaves for war” and that the descendants of such people do not deserve leadership or influential roles within the NPP.

In a statement dated November 2, 2025, and signed by the Caucus Secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Ashanti NPP MPs completely disassociated themselves from the MP’s comments, insisting they run counter to the party’s long-standing commitment to unity, equality, and inclusivity.

“The Ashanti Regional Caucus completely disassociates itself from this narrative and condemns it in no uncertain terms,” the statement read. “The NPP was founded on the timeless principles of freedom, equality of opportunity, and inclusivity. Ours is a Party that rewards merit, loyalty, and service — not lineage, tribe, or religion.”

The Caucus reaffirmed that every member of the NPP, regardless of origin or background, has the right to aspire to any leadership position, both within the party and nationally.

“As the bedrock of the NPP, the Ashanti Region rejects any attempt to use history, tribe, or identity to divide our ranks,” the statement continued. “Such rhetoric only undermines the unity and cohesion that have driven our Party’s success.”

The MPs further called on all party members — especially those in leadership — to exercise restraint and decorum in public commentary, urging a focus on respect and discipline to protect party unity.

“The Ashanti Regional NPP Parliamentary Caucus stands firmly for a united Party and a united Ghana,” it concluded.

This follows earlier clarification from the NPP’s national leadership, which also distanced the party from the MP’s alleged remarks, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to national unity and equality among all Ghanaians.
