The chauffeur who was driving boxer Anthony Joshua when a car crash claimed the lives of two members of his team has appeared before a court in Nigeria.

Adeniyi Kayode, 46, appeared at the Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State on Tuesday in connection with the fatal accident, which occurred on December 29 near Lagos. He has previously been charged with four offences, including causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash involved a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and members of his entourage, which collided with a stationary lorry on the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in south-west Nigeria. Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua sustained injuries and was treated in hospital.

During Tuesday’s court appearance, proceedings were adjourned until February 25 after the prosecution requested additional time to seek legal advice. Kayode, who appeared in court dressed in black, did not speak during the hearing.

He had earlier been granted bail in the sum of five million naira (approximately $3,500) and was released from custody pending further proceedings.

Joshua, a former heavyweight world champion, was discharged from hospital two days after the crash. Images from the scene showed the 36-year-old being assisted from the wreckage.

Following the incident, Joshua paid tribute to Ayodele and Ghami in an emotional Instagram post, describing them as “great men” and expressing sympathy for their families.

Joshua, who was born in Watford but has family roots in Sagamu, was reportedly travelling to visit relatives for New Year celebrations at the time of the accident, a family member told the BBC.

Kayode faces charges including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
