- Officer caught assaulting journalist has been interdicted and charged
The Ghana Police Service has pledged swift arrests in connection with the violent disturbances that disrupted the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.
This assurance comes after investigators reviewed several video recordings and collected statements from victims and eyewitnesses, leading to what the police describe as “vital leads.”
The incident, which unfolded at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, involved an attack on former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson and others by unidentified individuals, causing a temporary halt in voting until order was restored.
In a press release signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, the police confirmed that efforts are underway to identify all persons involved using video evidence. Statements from affected individuals have also been gathered to support ongoing investigations.
Police further revealed that victims have been issued medical forms, and an officer captured on video assaulting a journalist has been interdicted and is now facing criminal charges.
The Service reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability for any violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the electoral process, and urged the public to report credible information via emergency lines 18555 or 191.
