A Year of Impact: Akrofuom MP Joseph Azumah Details Achievements One Year After His Election
MP cites peace, widow support, education reforms and youth development as key gains

- Peace and unity restored in Akrofuom, with NPP and NDC supporters coexisting harmoniously under the MP’s leadership
- Social and education support expanded, including GH₵700,000 worth of relief items for widows, school uniforms
- Youth and sports development boosted, with the construction of Akrofuom’s first-ever football park and support for informal sector workers
One year after earning the mandate of the people of Akrofuom, the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Joseph Azumah, is being widely praised for what many residents describe as visible leadership rooted in peace, compassion, and development.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Thursday January 8, 2026 the Akrofuom MP offered a detailed account of his achievements since assuming office, stressing that his first priority was to understand the real needs of his people.
“There Is Peace in Akrofuom”
According to Hon. Azumah, peace and unity—one of his key campaign promises—has been fully realised.
“There is peace in Akrofuom,” he stated, adding that supporters of both the NPP and NDC now live and work together in harmony, creating a stable environment for development.
To better appreciate the challenges on the ground, the MP revealed that he spent about two weeks in the constituency, engaging directly with residents to listen to their concerns.
GH₵700,000 Lifeline for Widows
One of the most touching highlights of his first year in office is a massive social intervention targeting widows in the constituency.
Hon. Azumah disclosed that he has donated relief items valued at about GH₵700,000 to 1,500 widows, with plans to expand the number to 2,000 beneficiaries due to overwhelming demand.
Initially planned for 500 widows, the programme was scaled up after the MP realised how many vulnerable women needed support.
The donation, carried out at a modest ceremony in Akrofuom, included:
-
Bags of rice
-
Cooking oil
-
Tins of mackerel
-
Pieces of cloth
The initiative, he explained, is aimed at reducing the economic burden on widows and restoring dignity to vulnerable households.
Gratitude to the People
Hon. Azumah expressed deep appreciation to the people of Akrofuom for the confidence reposed in him.
“It is because of the people that I am the MP for Akrofuom today,” he said, acknowledging that the mandate has enabled him to better serve and represent the constituency.
Education: Fixing Gaps, Restoring Hope
Education has also received significant attention under his leadership. The MP revealed that Akrofuom once suffered a teacher deficit of about 380 in public schools, a situation that affected teaching and learning.
Through his intervention, teacher transfers have been facilitated to reduce the shortfall.
Additionally, using his share of the MPs’ Common Fund, Hon. Azumah provided about 500 school uniforms last year to pupils who were wearing torn and tattered uniforms. He announced that another 500 uniforms will be sewn in 2026 to support the remaining children.
To encourage academic excellence, the top 20 best-performing BECE students in the constituency were also given financial support to help with provisions and educational needs.
Youth, Sports and the First-Ever Football Park
On youth development, the MP revealed a major breakthrough: Akrofuom had no football pitch prior to his tenure.
With support from Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuye, processes have been completed for the construction of Akrofuom’s first-ever football park, complete with spectator stands and natural grass.
He announced that the first phase of the project will be commissioned on March 6, in commemoration of Ghana’s Independence Day, with another phase scheduled for later in the year.
Jobs, Informal Sector and the Future
Hon. Azumah also touched on efforts to tackle unemployment, particularly among the youth. He noted that his office has supported hairdressers and workers in the informal sector, helping them stabilise and grow their small businesses.
