The Ashanti Regional Coordination Centre on Wednesday witnessed the launch of Operation Stop Fire Disaster (OSFID), a new initiative aimed at reducing fire-related incidents in the region.

The operation is organized by the Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in partnership with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), XpressGas, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).

Speaking at the launch, Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, Director of NADMO in the Ashanti Region, emphasized that the initiative seeks to educate the public on disaster prevention.

“NADMO has limited resources to assist victims of fire and other emergencies,” he said. “Operation OSFID is about prevention and awareness to protect lives and property.”

Theophilus Kwaku Appiah, Ashanti Regional Assistant Station Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, noted that investigations have shown many fire outbreaks are caused by traders cooking inside market centres. He urged traders to prepare meals at home and warned against eating in the markets.

Mr. Appiah further cautioned against using unlicensed or uncertified electricians to repair electrical appliances, stressing that such practices increase the risk of fire and other hazards.

The launch of OSFID marks a concerted effort by regional authorities to safeguard the public and reinforce fire safety awareness across Ashanti’s bustling markets.
