Ghana football legend Mohammed Polo has questioned Laryea Kingston’s readiness to take charge of the Black Stars amid reports linking the former Ghana international to the vacant head coach position.
Polo’s concerns stem from Kingston’s decision to step down as head coach of the Black Starlets after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Starlets suffered a 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship on May 25, 2024, at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Polo believes Kingston should have remained in his position despite the setback, arguing that leaving the role raises questions about his readiness to handle the demands of coaching the senior national team.
“Laryea Kingston doesn’t have the heart to coach the Black Stars because he doesn’t have the heart. I don’t know why he left his job,” Polo told Citi Sports.
Kingston is reportedly among the names being considered for the Black Stars job following the resignation of Carlos Queiroz.
Queiroz stepped down after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), together with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, is currently working to identify Queiroz’s successor.
A five-member technical search committee has been tasked with assessing potential candidates and submitting its recommendations by October 9.
The committee’s report will contribute to the process of appointing Ghana’s next head coach as the Black Stars prepare for their upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifying matches.
