Contractors are expected to return to site in the coming weeks to resume work on Phase Two of the Kumasi Central Market Project, popularly known as the Kejetia Market.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced that negotiations with the contractor had been completed, paving the way for work to resume.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series press conference on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said about 60 per cent of Phase Two remains unfinished after the project stalled for nearly two years.
He explained that Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson had approved the resumption of work, while discussions were also ongoing on the financing and pricing of Phase Three.
Mr Ayariga said proceeds from Phases One and Two would also be used to facilitate the commencement of Phase Three.
He assured residents of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region that the contractor would soon return to site and present a plan for the development of Phase Three.
The Minister said the government was also working on an ambitious programme to develop modern markets across the country, which is expected to be outlined in the 2027 Budget.
He further disclosed that the government had redesignated its “24-Hour Economy Markets” initiative as District Economy Markets, with the aim of providing a model market for every district.
According to him, the projects have been divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on shops, sheds and commercial spaces, while the second phase will include social amenities such as police and fire stations.
